5 things to bring to your fall family session

If I had a nickel for every time one of my clients asked what to bring to their family session, I’d have…well, a lot of nickels. over the years, I’ve been able to narrow it down to just 5 things that make all the difference in the world and ensure a smooth, relaxed and fun (maybe even for dad) family session. Check it out…

  1. If you have a blanket that you don’t mind getting a bit dirty, or leafy, bring it, especially if you have little ones. make sure it’s neutral, or goes with your home décor and/or outfits so that when you have your finished images hanging on your walls, the transition of color is seamless. I love to have families come together on a blanket and snuggle, have tickle fights, or just be. And when I am getting individuals of the kiddos, having a blanket for the little ones to sit on helps tremendously.

2. Bribes!! omgosh, bring all the goldfish, animal crackers, suckers, m&ms, promises of extra screen time, an extra 15 minutes before bedtime, WHATEVER it takes!!!! I’m serious, When your little ones or grumpy teenagers (or grumpy husbands) start to get distracted, or get an attitude, a little reminder of their reward can get them quickly back on track.

3. bring reinforcements. Sometimes it’s nice if your MIL, sister, or friend can tag along to help with the babies so that moms and dads can have a few shots together, just the two of them. Of course, I know that doesn’t always work out. I have taken pictures with many-a-baby in my arms, so I am always happy to help:) and bonus, I get to hold a baby.

4. Accessorize! Bring hats, jackets, your child’s favorite stuffy or blankie! It’s a great idea to bring items you can easily put on and take off to get more variation in your images. SOme of my favorite pictures are of children with their special stuffy and/or blankie, or wearing mom or dad’s hat that’s too big for them. So cute!

5. Bug spray and water. I know, super fun stuff. We all know that “fall” in AZ is actually just 2nd summer and monsoon season at dusk bring out the mosquitos like nobody’s business. Keep everyone from slapping themselves and panting from dehydration with some skin so soft and a water bottle.
